Paper fans are a beautiful and festive way to celebrate Chinese New Year.
This craft activity combines creativity and cultural learning. It allows toddlers to explore traditional colours, symbols, and designs while enhancing their motor skills.

Materials Needed
- Paper plates
- Craft sticks
- Red paper
- Scissors
- Glue or tape
- Markers, crayons, or paint
- Optional: glitter, stickers, or decorative elements
Step 1: Prepare the Fan Base
Start by cutting the paper plate in half to form the shape of a traditional fan. Attach a craft stick to the bottom of the curved edge using glue or tape. This forms the handle of the fan.
Step 2: Decorate the Fan
Let your toddler decorate the fan using traditional Chinese New Year colours like red and gold, symbolising good luck and prosperity. Please encourage them to use markers, paint, or crayons to create patterns, such as swirls, dots, or clouds.
Step 3: Add Intricate Designs
Incorporate more detail by folding strips of red paper into small accordion shapes. Glue these onto the edges of the fan for a decorative touch. You can also add zodiac animal cutouts or Chinese symbols for authenticity.
Step 4: Include Glitter and Stickers
To make the fan sparkle and festive, enhance it with glitter, stickers, or other decorative elements. Let your toddler choose their favourite embellishments to personalise their creation.
Step 5: Teach Patterns and Shapes
Use this opportunity to teach your toddler about shapes and patterns. Discuss their designs and how they connect to Chinese New Year traditions.
Step 6: Let It Dry
Allow the fan to dry completely before handling to ensure secure decorations.
Step 7: Display or Use the Fan
Once finished, display the fans as part of your Chinese New Year decorations or let your toddler use them during celebrations to cool off or play pretend.
