This fun and simple Q-tip painting activity celebrates the magnificence of Chinese dragons while encouraging creativity and fine motor skill development.
It’s a great way to introduce little ones to the cultural significance of dragons in Chinese New Year traditions.

Materials Needed
- White paper (or a dragon template)
- Paint in various colours
- Cotton buds (Q-tips)
- A reusable plate or palette for paint
- Protective covering for the workspace
Step 1: Set Up the Workspace
Cover a clean and safe workspace with a mat or newspaper. Place the white paper or dragon template on the workspace. Pour small amounts of different-coloured paint onto a reusable plate or palette.
Step 2: Start with a Dragon Outline
If you use a template, place it on the paper as a guide. If you prefer freehand, draw a simple dragon outline to the painting structure. The outline helps define where the Q-tip dots will go.
Step 3: Dip and Dot with Q-Tips
Show your toddler how to dip a cotton bud into the paint and press it onto the paper to create dots. Please encourage them to fill the dragon outline with dots, mixing and layering colours to create unique patterns.
Step 4: Explore Patterns and Textures
Encourage your toddler to experiment with different patterns, like clustering dots to make scales or creating long lines to mimic the dragon’s body. Mixing colours on the paper adds depth and texture to their masterpiece.
Step 5: Add Finishing Touches
Once the dragon is dotted with paint, let your child add the final details using cotton buds or even a brush. They can add eyes, fire, or other creative elements to bring the dragon to life.
Step 6: Share Cultural Stories
While painting, share stories about dragons’ importance in Chinese culture, their role as symbols of strength and prosperity, and their connection to New Year celebrations.
Step 7: Let It Dry and Display
Allow the artwork to dry completely before moving it. Once dry, display the dragon painting as part of your New Year decorations or in your child’s play area.
