Mandala stones are beautiful and meditative creations that combine art with relaxation.
Their intricate patterns may look complex, but you can easily create these mesmerising designs with a few techniques.

What You’ll Need
- Smooth, flat rocks
- Acrylic paints in your choice of colours
- Dotting tools or the rounded end of paintbrush handles
- A pencil for sketching guidelines (optional)
- Clear sealant to protect your design
Step 1: Prepare Your Rock
Clean your rock with soapy water and let it dry completely.
Apply two coats of acrylic paint to a base colour. Allow each coat to dry thoroughly for a smooth surface.
Step 2: Create Your Central Dot
Place a large dot in the centre of the rock using a dotting tool or the rounded end of a paintbrush.
This serves as the focal point of your mandala design.
Step 3: Build Your Pattern Outward
- Add larger dots around the central dot to create a circular pattern.
- Use the “dip and dot” technique: dip your tool into the paint, then dot it onto the rock without re-dipping for every dot. This creates smaller, fading dots as you go.
- Gradually work outward, creating concentric circles of dots.
Step 4: Add Smaller Dots Between Larger Ones
To add intricacy to your design, dot smaller circles between the larger ones.
You can use contrasting colours to make the pattern pop.
Step 5: Experiment with Patterns
Begin with simple spiral or radiating designs.
As you gain confidence, incorporate geometric shapes like triangles or petal-like patterns into your mandala.
Don’t worry about achieving perfection – the process is meant to be relaxing and creative.
Step 6: Seal Your Mandala Stone
Once your design is completely dry, apply a clear sealant to protect the paint and enhance the colours. This will ensure your mandala stone remains vibrant and durable.
