This toddler-friendly craft activity combines cultural storytelling with hands-on creativity. It allows little ones to explore this meaningful tradition while practising fine motor skills.
It’s a fun and simple way to introduce your child to Chinese customs and the joy of festive crafts.
Materials Needed
- Red paper
- Gold markers or pens
- Decorative stickers (Chinese New Year motifs like lanterns, mandarin oranges, etc.)
Step 1: Prepare the Red Paper
Cut the red paper into rectangles, approximately 12 cm x 18 cm. This size works well for folding into envelopes.
Step 2: Fold the Envelope Shape
- Lay the red paper horizontally.
- Fold the bottom edge up, leaving about 4 cm at the top for the envelope flap.
- Crease the fold firmly.
Step 3: Seal the Sides
Apply a small amount of glue or double-sided tape to the edges of the folded bottom section to create a pocket. Leave the top flap open.
Step 4: Decorate with Gold Symbols
- Use gold markers to draw traditional Chinese symbols like 福 (fu) for good fortune.
- Encourage your toddler to add simple patterns, like dots, swirls, or stars.
Step 5: Add Stickers
Let your toddler choose decorative stickers featuring Chinese New Year symbols, like lanterns, mandarin oranges, or dragons. Place them on the envelope for a festive touch.
Step 6: Share the Tradition
While crafting, share the story behind “hongbao.” Explain that these red envelopes are given during Chinese New Year to wish good luck and prosperity.
Mention how the tradition began with parents giving children wrapped coins to protect them from an ancient demon called Sui.
