Rainbow rice adds a delightful, textured twist to traditional Easter egg decorating.
This craft offers toddlers a sensory-rich experience and is relatively mess-free, making it perfect for enthusiastic little decorators.

Materials Needed
- White rice
- Liquid food colouring
- White vinegar
- Seal-able plastic bags
- Hard-boiled eggs
- Measuring cups
- Paper towels
Step 1: Prepare the Coloured Rice
- Measure the Rice
Pour ½ cup of uncooked white rice into a sealable plastic bag for each colour you create. - Add Food Colouring and Vinegar
Add 10-12 drops of liquid food colouring and ½ teaspoon of white vinegar to the rice in each bag. The vinegar helps the colour adhere better to the eggs. - Mix the Colour
Seal the bag securely and shake it until the rice is evenly coated with colour. If the colour isn’t as vibrant as desired, add more drops of food colouring and shake again.
Step 2: Prepare the Eggs
- Roll Eggs in Vinegar
Before decorating, roll each hard-boiled egg in a small bowl containing about ¼ cup of white vinegar. This step helps the colours adhere more effectively to the eggshells.
Step 3: Decorate the Eggs
- Combine Rice and Egg
Place one vinegar-coated egg into a bag of coloured rice. - Shake to Colour
Seal and gently shake the bag, ensuring the rice covers the egg completely. Shake lightly for a more speckled appearance; for fuller coverage, shake more vigorously. - Layer Colours (Optional)
To achieve a rainbow effect, repeat the process with different colours. Start with the lightest colour and progress to darker shades to prevent unwanted colour mixing.
Step 4: Dry the Eggs
- Remove and Dry
Carefully remove the decorated egg from the bag and place it on a paper towel-lined tray to dry. Allow the eggs to dry completely before handling them further.
Additional Tips
- Sensory Play: Save the coloured rice after decorating; it can be used for sensory play activities throughout the year.
- Safety: Always supervise toddlers during this activity to ensure they don’t ingest any materials.
