A sensory bin treasure hunt is a fun and interactive way for toddlers to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day while developing fine motor skills, problem-solving abilities, and sensory exploration.
Using a mix of textured materials and hidden treasures, this hands-on activity keeps little ones engaged and curious.

Materials Needed
- Large plastic bin
- Green split peas or coloured rice
- Plastic gold coins
- Foam or fabric shamrocks
- Mini cauldrons
- Green mesh tubing (cut into small pieces)
- Scoops, cups, and tongs
- Alphabet cards (optional)
- Wax paper or a tray for easy cleanup
Step 1: Prepare the Sensory Bin Base
Fill a large plastic bin with split peas, painted rice, or water beads. Spread the base evenly to create a fun and colourful sensory foundation.
Step 2: Hide the Shamrocks and Coins
Bury foam and fabric shamrocks throughout the bin. Scatter plastic gold coins and mini cauldrons to make the treasure hunt exciting.
Step 3: Add Texture with Mesh Tubing
Cut green mesh tubing into small pieces and mix them into the bin. The stretchy texture allows toddlers to twist, loop, and manipulate the material, adding to the sensory experience.
Step 4: Provide Scoops and Cups
Place scoops, cups, or tongs inside the bin for extra fine motor practice. Encourage toddlers to dig, pour, and transfer materials while searching for hidden treasures.
Step 5: Encourage Exploration and Learning
Let children explore the different textures while counting coins or searching for alphabet cards.
This activity can be adapted by incorporating letters, numbers, or themed objects to encourage additional learning through play. Keep the bin on a wax paper-lined tray for easy cleanup.
